Nobody is certain why the urban center , farm , and remote monasteries of the Earthlike satellite Areth were abandoned . But the Areth Research Commission is devoted to document what it can about Areth civilisation , based on the architecture it left behind .
With his online science fiction art script Areth : An Architectural Atlas , artist Adam Ryder has created an incredible written document of xenopology , replete with gorgeous architectural photograph and funnily somber scientific notes about the beings who progress the world he ’s beguile .
Ryder wrote to io9 to explain a little about the project :

The buildings in the photographs are real place , mostly in the Southwest that have been made to come out as if they reside on a cloudy , yellowy planet . Each site in the Atlas is accompany by textual matter which speculates anthropologically about the mapping of each building and about the lose civilization which create it .
Given that these buildings are actually on Earth , it ’s no surprise that Arethean civilisation are in some ways a distorted reflection of Earth cultures . Unlike our militant civilizations , though , Aretheans never engage in industrial warfare . or else , they lived collectively and sink their disputes in court . They come along to have devoted much time to developing technologies to see their planet ’s foreign weather , as well as superpower plants that harvest electrical vigour from the atmosphere . Though technologically not much more sophisticated than Earth civilisation , Areth ’s peoples had an all-embracing renewable Department of Energy meshing , scientific observation posts , and extremely efficient farms . I love the section wehre Ryder describe the weird Arethean apiary , where they raised mouse - sized “ bees ” that created a honey - like substance used to make an intoxicant like vino or beer .
The Aretheans had a matriarchal religion , and their idea of amusement is a complete eversion of ours on Earth . When Aretheans fail to the dramaturgy , the vast legal age of citizenry would perform for a very bantam audience sit down in a small area beneath the enormous , wrapping - around stage .

translate the descriptions of this lost civilization , it ’s unvoiced not to feel like it ’s a the story of what Earth civilizations might have become if we had taken a more or less different steering . What if we ’d never had industrial warfare , or had focused on renewable energy before we delved into our fogey fuel stores ? That the Aretheans have mysteriously disappeared make this idea almost resistless , as if we ’re visiting a vanished timeline so close to being our own that it has left an intact progress environment behind .
