Afterbeing accused of tweak datato make it seem like a larger pct of its New York City hosts were innocently renting out their personal homes , Airbnb accommodate yesterday that it did indeed remove “ roughly 1,500 ” listings from its website before making the data public .
In aletterto the New York State Assembly and Senate and accompanying FAQ , Airbnb aver it did indeed remove New York City itemisation . But the frames it as part of their own on-going initiative to move out any listings that do not align with the company ’s value :
We issued our Community Compact in November . Throughout November , and logical with our Compact commitments , we take away roughly 1,500 of the 37,000 + Airbnb listings in New York City in an effort to remove listing that appeared to be see by commercial operator and did not think over Airbnb ’s visual modality for our community . 622 hosts were impacted , include 375 ( 60 % ) that had 2 or more listings removed .

This pruning of the Airbnb listings just before they were released to the public was exactly what wassuspected by our own Josh Laurito , who was one of a handful of journalists who wereallowed to peek at the information . The issue was brought to national attention after areport from the watchdog website Inside Airbnb , which claimed 1,438 itemisation had disappeared . That would be decent around the “ approximately 1,500 ” Airbnb describes .
Airbnb did n’t technically do anything wrong — of course it has the right to remove listings that violate its terms of service . This does look bad , though . It really does seem like the companionship purposely tried to cull listings from more market interests — the kinds of host that just lease out a caboodle of flat which could be used for lodging — before it relinquish this info publically . It ’s disappointing after the company made such a big to - do about transparency .
In addition to the missive , Airbnb released revised dataon the number of itemisation per host , the identification number of nights booked per year , and the percentage of New York City revenue bring in by the different types of hosts . According to this information , 39 percent of total NYC revenue is brought in by host with multiple listing , which went down by 3 percentage after The Purge .
