The fossil are some of the oldest - known Tree and were discovered in what was once an ancient lake in northeastern Canada . The species is called Sanfordiacaulis densifolia and would have taken up residence under the taller member of the wood canopy . Theearliest fogey treesdate back to the late Devonian Period , and these — from the early carbonous — are just a few million years vernal . It ’s not clear what Sanfordiacaulis ’ closest congress are on the tree of life ( no pun intend ) , which means it ’s incertae sedis — an enigmatic taxon .
Dr. Seuss ’ Truffula trees were credibly inspired by a cypress tree thatdied in 2019 , but one could indicate that these real - life sentence trees were even more alien . Research describing the ancient flora from foliage to trunk ispublishedtoday in Current Biology .

“ We estimate that each leaf get at least another meter before terminating , ” said Robert Gastaldo , a fossilist at Colby College and the survey ’s star author , in a Cellrelease . “ This means that the ‘ bottle brush ’ had a dense canopy of parting that cover at least 5.5 meter ( or 18 feet ) around a trunk that was non - woody and only 16 centimeters ( or 0.5 groundwork ) in diam . Startling to say the least . ”

“ The account of life on land consists of industrial plant and beast that are unlike any of those that live at the present tense , ” Gastaldo said in a statement . “ Evolutionary mechanisms operating in the inscrutable yesteryear result in organisms that successfully lived over farsighted periods of time , but their shapes , forms , growth architectures , and life histories set about different trajectory and strategies . Rare and strange fogy , such as the New Brunswick tree , is but one example of what colonise our planet but was an unsuccessful experimentation . ”
