Nearly six months after their split,Ben AffleckandLindsay Shookusare back spending time together.

“They’ve struck up a friendship again and are spending time together,” a source tells PEOPLE of theTriple Frontierstar, 46 andSaturday Night Liveproducer, 38.

Another insider adds that while the exes are indeed talking again, both are more focused on their respective careers and families vs. rekindling a full-blown romance.

“He really enjoys spending time with her but his focus will remain his kids and family,” says the Affleck pal. “I think he’s always been interested in seeing where his relationship with Lindsay could go, but these are two people who are very focused on their families and that distance between New York and L.A. is difficult sometimes.”

The long distance was allegedly a major factor in why theformer couple split last August, after nearly a year of dating. Affleck and Shookus firstmade their relationship publicwhen they were spotted grabbing dinner in July 2017.

“It was amicable, but unfortunately it didn’t work out, partly because of work and family obligations on different coasts,” an Affleck source told PEOPLE at the time. “They truly cared for each other and tried to make it work. Unfortunately now is not the time.”

Affleck is L.A.-based, where he lives near exJennifer Garner, 46, and their children Violet, 13, Seraphina, 10, and Samuel, 6. Shookus lives in New York City, where she works onSNLand shares custody of a 5-year-old daughter with ex-husband Kevin Miller.

The Affleck insider notes that in addition to theJustice Leaguestar being focused on family and co-parenting with Garner, he’s serious about continuing with his treatment program for alcohol addiction after a40-day stint in rehablast year.

“Ben’s primary focus is spending time with his family and maintaining his physical and mental well-being,” says the source. “He is in a good place and works really hard to stay there.”
