Andre Braugher’s cause of death has been revealed.
TheBrooklyn Nine-Ninestardied at age 61 on Monday. His rep confirmed at the time that the actor died after a recent illness, but now tells PEOPLE that Braugher’s death was due to lung cancer.
It is unclear when Braugher was diagnosed with the illness.
The actor, known for his roles in acclaimed crime series such asHomicide: Life on the StreetandBrooklyn Nine-Nine, earned11 Emmy nominationsthroughout his career.
He won two Emmys, the first in 1998 for his role as Det. Frank Pemberton inHomicide, and his second for his portrayal of Nick Atwater inThief. He received four Emmy nominations for his role as Capt. Raymond Holt inBrooklyn Nine-Nine.
