Continuum has always had some really interesting political questions at its gist : the rise of corporate power , the independence of the police , and the morality of seek to conserve a flawed status quo . But the barbellate late sequence proves this show might be quick to delve cryptical . Spoilers ahead …
The above snip shows my absolute favorite minute in the episode , when the liberal talking head word on the current affairs show get speechifying about how Liber8 has the correct idea — and Liber8 ’s Travis shoots him , without a second thought . “ No more talk heads . ” Heh .
This was a really swell setup for an episode that explores some of the openhanded cracks that have been opening in the show ’s two oppose English . Liber8 has been separate , on and off , over the question of how uttermost and violent its means should be . And meanwhile , the cops are under the thumb of big corporations ( especially Piron ) and have been getting a lot of flak for snafu like the big college campus butchery .
So in last nighttime ’s sequence ( as aired in the U.S. ) , Dillon ’s daughter gets catch putting up an anti - collective streamer at the central office of Fermatas , a heavy weapons - maker . front accusation of favouritism , Dillon goes on the same current - affair program that Julian went on recently , opposite Nigel the blowhard leftie . But just as Dillon is scoring some points , Travis and Lukas show up to take everyone in the TV studio apartment surety . They claim to need to air a pronunciamento , but actually they want the post ’s satellite codes because it was bought by Fermatas — so they use the satellite codes to break into Fermatas ’ inviolable system and get some corporate espionage against other company .
Along the way , you get some really neat argument over stuff and nonsense like whether enceinte - money republic is still majority rule . And whether you’re able to apply the corporate - owned media to knock corporations . ( Which is why Fermatas bought the post in the first place , to quieten critic . ) And is Dillon a fascist , or does being a corporal pawn free him of fascism ? Is Travis really pro - exemption , or just require to substitute his own strain of totalitarianism for collective control ?
The whole thing reminds me a bit of internet , a eldritch insurgent 1970s movie that takes position in a then - close time to come where TV electronic internet have buy the farm way over the edge into news media - as - amusement . Everybody remembers internet for the bit where the guy shouts “ I ’m mad as Hell and I ’m not going to take any more . ” But there ’s also a running subplot where the enterprising faux - journalist attempt to turn some left-wing terrorist into television stars , to get paygrade from their murder spree . ( And it backfire horribly , of course . )
Mostly , though , after too many hours watching CNN , MSNBC and Fox News on airport TV screens , there ’s something preposterously satisfying about the idea of shooting a few television receiver pundits . Moving on .
In the end , Dillon gets to play hero — in more or less exactly the room that Travis predicted he would n’t ( almost as if Travis planted that estimate in Dillon ’s promontory . ) Dillon gets the emcee of the show out , and she ’s in lurve . But Liber8 gets what it want , too . And then it turns out that Dillon ’s girl is actually mostly pretending to be a Liber8 sympathiser — she ’s actually underground , infiltrating Liber8 for daddy .
( And she ’s also the girl of Weaver on Falling Skies , which is hella distracting . Plus she co - stars with Terry Chen , who plays Curtis on Continuum , in a “ cannibal Taiwanese eating house ” moviecalled Evil Feed . Huh . )
Anyway , there ’s a moment of a “ fathers and daughters ” root in this instalment — the framing write up is about Travis , back in the dystopian future , chat his previously unobserved wife and girl . The CPS shows up and Travis hides , but Travis ’ girl gives his position away . Thus earning a particular CPS badge to show that she ’s a firm collective citizen . Yay !
Oh , and Dillon gets into this scratching in the first situation , because he misplays his mitt . When Lukas calls Betty , he range her not to answer . That means he does n’t get advance word of advice of the TV post plan of attack , which could have get along in handy . And by and by , everybody overcompensates by giving Betty too much rope — which is how Liber8 gets the full artificial satellite computer code .
Sharks and Mongooses
Meanwhile , the big on-going story of “ too many Alecs ” continues — Alec Prime has taken Kellog ’s advice to drown with the sharks , and has turned out to be a quick work . His off - the - stand suits have been supersede with tailored ones , and he ’s getting horribly easy in his corporate throneroom . When Kellog jaw again , suggesting this metre that Alec could practice a mongoose to deal with snakes on the control panel , Alec just shoots him down , offer him a settlement for SadTech and kicking him to the curb .
Alec Prime has really taken the “ corporal alpha ” matter to heart , to the item where it has to be a front . He ’s overwhelmed by all the clobber he ’s con recently , about Escher being his dead forefather and Jason being his Logos , and he does n’t hope anybody after Emily turned out to be a fraudulence . He did n’t get any of the katharsis his other ego got ( something that also seems to be reliable of Carlos in this timeline ) and he ’s overcompensating by turn himself into a tough guy .
At least , that ’s my read on Alec Prime ’s shift , which has happened at insane speed and seems skin - deep .
Meanwhile , Alec Prime pursues a vendetta against alt - Alec , the prison term - traveling version . All of a sudden , alt - Alec ca n’t get into his banking concern account or get admission to any of his other stuff . Alec Prime is “ the landlord ” of this timeline , and he ’s force out the squatter . Kellog laments to alt - Alec that his clock time travel has ruined Kellog ’s lifetime — ignoring that Kellog chose to have Escher killed , typeset off this whole range of events . Alec says that nobody ’s life involve to be ruined , and it just depend on what you ’re capable of . ( Is Alec suggest that Kellog should kill his other ego for him ? It sure as shooting sounds like that . ) To which Kellog enounce he ’s flattered , but the fanciest professional dancer in Alec ’s life is actually Emily . ( In other words , if you desire someone to kill your other self , try your girlfriend , I guess . )
Around that same sentence , Alec Prime discovers that Kiera know about his other metre - traveling ego all along . Because he ’s see betrayal everywhere , Alec Prime decides that Kiera has betrayed him , and cuts her off , with a stream of corporatese about how a double - traverse partner needs to be bought out or cut loose . This is the hundredth time Kiera has kept things from Alec , but this time he ’s of a sudden sensible .
Kiera continues to be the worst
She really is . The worst . Bear in brain that this “ two Alecs ” problem is what Kiera was sent back in clock time to stop . The Freelancers did n’t liquidate their worthful fourth dimension machine on Kiera just so she could conveniently replace her dead other self , or play cops - and - terrorists with Liber8 . Her mission — her only mission — in going back in metre was to deal with Alec traveling back and mucking up the timeline .
Kiera made some dissonance , betimes on , about determine which Alec she like better , or could bank to help her get home . But really , if her task was to foreclose contaminant of the timeline , she should have killed the time - traveling Alec ( or locked him in one of those Freelancer cells ) the moment she get him . Maybe she has n’t done that because she needs him to find out who killed her other self — but if so , that ’s a pretty selfish account for shirking her tariff .
And her rash decision to show Carlos her own dead body continues to expect fruit , with Carlos seeming progressively unstable . And make off . He ’s got some specific issues , including the fact that the fuzz are getting unaired to being the corporate enforcers from Kiera ’s future ( in this sequence , he wonder when they ’ll start being anticipate “ protector ” ) and companies like fermata seem more concerned in shielding their secrets than save life sentence . But he ’s also just randomly twitchy and raging .
Kiera ’s also the worst because of her treacley approaching to Dillon after Dillon ’s girl fake - yells at him , give Dillon a schmaltzy line about how Christine will find her way back to him .
And meanwhile , Kiera ’s status seems increasingly changeable . She ’s still working for the Freelancers , but mostly just feeding them vague cliche about how the timeline seems all right and Liber8 is n’t causing too much difficulty . When Curtis approaches her and offers to be her new partner because she ’s burned all her other relationship , she plays intemperately to get . But Curtis is right — shortly enough , Kiera is going to need all the friend she can regain .
