Thanks to Lions kicker Matt Prater, 2021 is starting off with some good news — and brews — for Detroit.
Bud Lightchallenged Prater and Denver Broncos kicker Brandon McManuslast summer to a field goal contest — whoever kicked the longest field goal during the 2020-2021 season would win their respective city free beer.
With the NFL’s regular season now over, Prater came out victorious thanks to a 59-yard field goal he kicked to help the Lions beat the Washington Football Team in November.
Prater tweeted about the victory, writing, “Detroit I know we didn’t have the season we would like, however, we did win you some bud lights.” Thebeer company responded, writing back to Prater, “We haven’t forgotten … @lions let’s make it happen for the people of Detroit!”
It is still unclear exactly how Detroit residents can snag their free brews.
Despite the loss, McManus still gave Prater a run for his money.

Aside from winning beer for the people of Detroit, Prater ended the season on a personal high note — he set an NFL record for most career 50-yard field goals after earning his 59th during the teams' final game on Sunday, according toSports Illustrated. The 36-year-old is set to become a free agent in March.
“That stuff usually takes care of itself and works out in the end either way,” Prater told the outlet of his impending free agency. “The easiest thing, obviously, would be to stay here with the kids and [we’re] kind of established here and we love being here and living in Michigan.”
“I would love to continue playing, and hopefully it would be here,” he continued.
The Lions ended the 2020-2021 season with a 5-11 record, which the Broncos also earned. Both teams missed out on a chance to play in the postseason.
