Just like the reasoning , trunk - nosedmulefain Philip Pullman ’s His Dark Materials series , elephant are capable of collaborate in situations where more than one grasping limb is required . In a serial of experiments ( pictured here ) , scientist observe elephants draw on opposite ends of a rope , cooperating to slew food toward them . Not only did they learn to organise quickly , but if their cooperator was delayed , they ’d carry onto the rope and wait to take out until the other arrived . If their mate could n’t get to the rope , they would n’t even bother . It would seem that elephants , like chimps and humans , empathise cooperation beyond simply being trained to act together .
