It was risky for Evil Dead Rise , the latest entry in a series thatset the standard for “ cabin in the woods ” repulsion , to choosea Los Angeles eminent - rise as its principle mount . But that risk pays off inwriter - theatre director Lee Cronin ’s young film , which balancesreverence for Sam Raimi ’s classicwith an entertaining exploration of its own sod .
After a prologue that does take a cabin in the forest — wink!—we dip into the story of Beth ( Lily Sullivan ) , who finds realism impolitely intruding into her John Rock n ’ roll life style when she substantiate she ’s pregnant . She promptly flees to the one refuge in her life , her former babe Ellie ( Vikings ’ Alyssa Sutherland ) , but finds a lot ’s changed since she last bothered to find out her vocalisation mail service . Ellie ’s been raise her three kids — teen Danny ( Morgan Davies ) and Bridget ( Gabrielle Echols ) , and tween Kassie ( Nell Fisher)—on her own since their papa split , and they ’re on the verge of having to move out of their flat , a ramshackle monolith ready in an L.A. beset with earthquakes , blackouts , and near - constant rainstorms .
It ’s a black situation all around , but the kids — a way-out deuce-ace who link up to each other with varying stage of aggravation and philia , as most sibling do — are handling the tension pretty well , at least until the late earthquake gives them a fright while they ’re down in the construction ’s crumbling parking garage . malevolent Dead trouble always begins when a character encounters a certain damn book ( here rendered in famously ghoulish form ; it ’s not Ash Williams ’ Necronomicon , but it ’s just as creepy ) and certain musical phrase are read aloud , and Cronin maintain with that tradition . We ’re fill up with dread , know this vulnerable family unit building block is about to fall soul - first into a world of harm — and since Evil Dead Rise knows we love , it makes bang-up , agonizing function of that anticipation .

That consciousness is an authoritative part of Evil Dead Rise — starting with the cabin in the first scene , there are several references to early pic , of both the subtle and “ chainsaw ” diversity . But you also need not be a Raimi lover to come the story here ; while it follows the familiar trajectory of Deadites ( who are of the same vicious , rag breed we ’re wonted to ) possessing multiple inauspicious theatrical role , Evil Dead Rise is also consciously trying to find its own course through this insaneness . The flat setting obviously help with this — who ’s up for some elevator horror?—but Cronin is also fascinated by how this supernatural desolation might rip through a family that was n’t exactly booming in the first property .
The tradeoff with hinging the plot on estranged sister reuniting under less - than - idealistic circumstances , and then also putting child in riskiness , is that Evil Dead Rise finds a tonicity more in contrast with the other Bruce Campbell - less series entry , 2013 ’s Evil Dead . In other word , a few one - liner away , the repugnance - drollery stylings that Evil Dead II and Army of Darkness ( and excellent television set continuationAsh vs. Evil Dead ) are especially prize for are not constitute here . This is a far darker tale , but that more serious tone preserve from being too serious by prevent a breakneck tread ( bless this motion picture for only being a tad over 90 hour ) and unfurling a most - perfect raiment of creatively abhorrent gore effects . That cheese grater setting you ’ve get wind so much about ? Try not screaming your head off when you see it . Just try on .
malign Dead Rise is in theaters now .
