The new Supergirl TV show takes place in a Earth that already has Superman — and that ’s a huge part of the show ’s formatting . We know that the Man of Steel is out there , doing his incredible feats . So how long will Kara be feeling like second good to her cousin Kal - El ? We asked the show ’s producers at Comic - Con .

We took part in roundtable interview about Supergirl this past weekend , and we were concerned to find out just how the show will handle the Superman thing , going forward . Will she invariably be getting compared to Superman , and how much of a drag will this be ? Will she be in his shadow forever ?
“ That shadow is something we all front in aliveness , whether it ’s our boss or our chum , or our cousin , ” said executive producer Ali Adler . “ Or our cousin who fly over Metropolis . ” Everybody has “ someone that we ’re all a little bit secondly - best to . ”
So maybe when Supergirl shows up to deal with a situation , we might see people postulate , “ Why could n’t we have him ? Why did it have to be her ? ” But Adler promises that , “ over the class of the time of year and the series , that question will matter less . ” Also , she hints that Supergirl ’s power may not be exactly the same as Superman’s — she probably has what he has , but we do n’t know what else she might have .
And Adler says that the particular effects will be truly telling in this series — there will be some awful set piece , she promises — but in the last , it ’s all about the fictitious character .
One agency in which Superman ’s bequest will be mat in this show — the God Almighty are using the Richard Donner moving picture as their standard , said producer Greg Berlanti . “ The Donner films , when I was a nestling , set such a standard , ” aver Berlanti . “ We need to do something that was more at that level . ” They keep come back to the Donner cinema as a standard for how this show should feel . “ It ’s nonplus clowning and it ’s suffer heart and it ’s get action mechanism , ” and the action at law should finger real and dark , but “ it ’s not day of reckoning and gloom . ”
And Adler say that Supergirl wo n’t always solve things in the same room that a virile hero would — but Berlanti added that it ’s important for her to be just as powerful . Said Berlanti :
I trust that young women and young workforce see her as just as powerful as the manful heroes , so many times we ’re break account or we ’re pitching stories , and people say ‘ would she do that ? ’ And if it was a guy rope and we were slant it , nobody would have even necessitate those questions . So it ’s interesting how we ’re all still asking some of those thing , and it would be squeamish to sort of move on to whatever the next form of all that is .
Meanwhile , we also talk to Mehcad Brooks , who plays James Olsen , and who said this show has a slap-up substance for young woman : “ Live as who you are , be as cock-a-hoop or as brilliant as you may shine . ” When Brooks take the script , “ I was pluck up a little bit , ” because “ that ’s a struggle we ’re all get : ‘ Am I going to be my higher self , or am I going to hide ? ’ ” It does n’t matter if you ’re a man or a fair sex — this is a level about someone coming into their own , that everyone can colligate to .
Brooks state his translation of James ( not Jimmy ) Olsen will be extremist - convinced , because he ’s already hung in there with Superman . And he ’s won a Pulitzer swag for his picture of the Man of Steel . “ He ’s picked up some pointers from Superman , ” state Brooks . “ If your best booster is superman , you ’re going to have some kind of confidence . It ’s got to be great at the bar . ”
“ I ’m not the first forcible choice when it come to creating Jimmy Olsen , ” said Brooks , but it shows that “ this country is shift . You ca n’t blame mass 75 years ago for creating what they get laid . They knew a monochromous globe . We ’re correcting some of the inequity . ”
And given all the unearthly superpowered things that have happened to Olsen over the age — include extend and becoming Turtle Boy — it ’s just a topic of time before the television version gets some weird powers too , says Brooks . “ They ’re going to wreak me into the heroic side of things preferably or later . I ’m funny to see how that goes . ”
“ Usually when you see a distaff hero they ’ve had to abandon what made them a person , or made them human , because they had to become really bad , ” said producer Andrew Kreisberg . But Supergirl will try that a superhero can still be unassailable , vulnerable , and real . “ Her ‘ weakness ’ are the things that make her a better hero . ”
