BarbieearnedStevie Nicks’s stamp of approval.
Nicks, who recentlyunveiled her very own Barbiedoll, tells PEOPLE she “loved” the film, and gave writer-directorGreta Gerwigspecial props.
TheFleetwood Macfrontwoman, who has penned some of the greatest hits in the rock ‘n’ roll canon, says if given the chance she doesn’t think she could accomplish what Gerwig, 40, did withBarbie.
“I thought that the director was magnificent,” Nicks, 75, says, adding that if presented with the same prompt (“go just write a story about Barbie”) she would have no idea where to begin.
“We’d go, like, ‘Well, how am I supposed to do that? What is it supposed to be about? Is there anything specific that happens in it?’ ” she says.
“Greta, she’s like, ‘Oh, okay. I’m up to that challenge,’” Nicks says. “And what a challenge that was, in my opinion.”

The singer-songwriter says, “If somebody said that to me, I would be hoping that I had a husband or a partner” like Gerwig’s partner andBarbieco-writerNoah Baumbach.
“She had somebody to be the sounding board for both of them to write it,” Nicks adds. “Because if it was just you sitting in your house at your desk trying to write that story without anybody to bounce off of or to really write with, that would have been really hard.”
“That would be the song that didn’t have an ending,” she says.
Even without her new Barbie doll, the Fleetwood Mac hitmaker has a special tie to the movie. She remembers owning the very first Barbie, the striped swimsuit-wearing doll thatMargot Robbieembodies at the beginning of the film.
But seeing her childhood doll on screen wasn’t necessarily her favorite moment.
“I had many favorite parts,” Nicks says. “I loved especially when she had the choice between the Birkenstock and the pumps.”

The “Landslide” singer’s otherBarbiehighlights were all products ofRyan Gosling’s “amazing” portrayal of Ken. “I thought he was so funny,” she says.
Nicks says she “loved” the moment when Ken asks Barbie to hang out at her Dreamhouse, and when “he hops in the back of the Corvette when she’s on her way, and she’s like, ‘What are you doing?’ ”
“He goes, ‘I’m going with you because if there’s no Barbie, there’s no Ken,’ ” Nicks recalls with a laugh. “I thought, ‘This is so funny, because it’s opposite.’ ”
“You do feel sorry for Ken,” she adds. “Poor Ken.”

The box office hit was especially enjoyable for Nicks because she watched it with her longtime collaborator and “Gemini twin,” guitarist Waddy Wachtel.

“We really were like the only people in the theater watching it, and it was so amazing because I thought, ‘Oh, I don’t know. Maybe he’s not going to like this.’ Well, he loved it,” Nicks says. “Whenever I would cry, he was crying … or he would laugh when I laughed. He would totally be laughing.”
After the end credits rolled, Nicks says she told Wachtel, “You know what, Waddy? There’s nobody I would have rather watched thisBarbiemovie with than you.”
“Because it was the male and the female energy coming together to watch this movie, and he loved and respected it,” the singer says. “And [he] respected the feminism and respected Barbie and respected her choices, as he respects me and my choices and my feminist leanings.”
“It was great, I loved it,” she adds.
