King met her now-husband,Steven Piet, on the set of Hulu’s 2019 drama seriesThe Act. The director, producer and writer directed two episodes of the show and toldVanity Fairof the experience. “As a director, you feel like you’re the emotional litmus test for the show. And when it works so well, it’s just so exciting to be there at that moment,” Piet said. King’s performance asGypsy Rose Blanchardgarnered her nominationsat theEmmy,SAGandGolden Globe Awards.
The pair made theirred carpet debut as a coupleat anEmmy partyin September 2019, and in 2022, Piet proposed to the actress. They eventuallywed on Sept. 2, 2023, in Spain after their legal ceremony in Los Angeles, a source confirmed to PEOPLE.

In a 2019 interview withVanity Fair, Piet said ofThe Act’s final episode, “I felt like my job was to step back as much as I could and just have the camera in the right place and let these amazing actors do what they do best … At times, I was so lost in their performances that I was forgetting to say, ‘Cut.’ "
He’s from Chicago
He was born in Chicago andstudied film at the Savannah College of Art and Design. After college, Piet went back to his home city to work in the production industry before heading to Hollywood.

King announced herengagement to Pietin an Instagram post. “I never knew happiness could be so powerful that it can take the air from your lungs, overwhelming every part of you that you can’t help but feel your eyes well from the undeniable joy,” she wrote. “The date was 2/2/22 when you asked me to marry you and made me the luckiest lady alive. I love you more than an Instagram caption could ever do justice. Hanging out with you forever sounds like a real dream, so let’s do it.”
In his own post,Piet wrote, “The weather was less than perfect. Cold. Windy. Perfectly imperfect to ask my best friend to spend a lifetime together. A lifetime of incredibly safe and vulnerable conversations. Holding hands on silent cab rides home, exhausted from great food and red wine. And oh, the laughter. The uncontrollable laughter. You’ve unlocked a dimension of love in me that I never knew existed.”

He and King got married in Spain
For their first dance, the bride and groom performed a choreographed number to Cat Power’s rendition of “Sea of Love.”
“I have never danced harder in my life than at my wedding,” King told Elite Daily in December 2023. “My husband and I got so hot, so sweaty. You know that heat where you can start to feel your heartbeat in your face? I was that hot.”
So, they decided tojump in the pool— clothes and all.
“It was the most fun because so many people joined us in their fancy dresses,” the actress shared. “It was the most romantic moment to me. It was so spontaneous, and it felt like such a movie, honestly. I loved the camaraderie of it all.”
Talking to PEOPLE in March 2024, King called her wedding “the best weekend of my whole life.” It was raining on their big day, and just when she and Piet decided to “lean into it,” something unexpected happened.
“Guests arrive for the ceremony, the sun starts shining. I was like, ‘This is insane. Do I believe in God?’ I’m just kidding, but it was better than we ever could have dreamed,” she said.
Prior to their destination wedding, King and Piet got legally married in the United States on Aug. 19, 2023. They “hit up a place called Same Day Marriage” in Los Angeles and went bowling with friends and family after.

Since going public with their relationship, King has posted photos of Piet on herInstagramon a regular basis.
In August 2022, King posted aplayful videoof her and Piet painting with friends. “Highly recommend going spatter painting with your favorite people,” King wrote over a video of their group dressed in ponchos painting on canvases.

A few months later, King paid tribute to her future husband onInstagramin honor of his 32nd birthday.
